Why is my CPU usage at 100%?

I’m running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit with 4 Gigabytes of RAM and I’m using 104/186 Gigabytes of Hard Drive Memory and I have an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.60 GHz Processor. I pressed Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up Windows Task Manager and I went under the Performance tab and it says my CPU Usage is at 100%. My computer has been really laggy, and I think this is the problem. How do I lower it? Why is it so high?

Answer #1

Try lowering the number of programs and other things that may be running. If your not using something be sure to close it so that it doesn’t take up space. You can also configure what programs run when you start your computer, open start and run MSCONFIG from there you can configure your system accordingly. One last note be sure to run a disk cleanup, especially when you’ve deleted mass files. Good luck.

Answer #2

Hmmm, okay, I’ll try this, I’ll get back to you.

Answer #3

I ran the Disk Cleanup and it still is at 100% CPU

Answer #4

Go to the task manager (CTRL+Alt+Delete) check your applications and see everything you have open. Then click on the processes tab which will bring up 5 sub-tabs (Image name,User,CPU,Memory,Description)Click the CPU sub-tab and let me know what programs are the highest.

Answer #5

We need more information. What’s your software,. Win Xp or ? What’s you virus protection, is it up to date? If you are up to date, then you may need to clean your register. No quick answers, but it can be fixed. But without knowing what your computer is loaded with, it’s impossible to troubleshoot.

Answer #6

If this is causing you problems I’d be willing to connect through remote assistance and take a look and see if I can help you out that way. Let me know how it goes either way.

Answer #7

I put it in my description

Answer #8

id start looking for a virus….

theres some out there that will stress your hardware so bad.

do this so i can see all your processes:

windows logo/start - run - [type] cmd - ok.

when cmd.exe pops up type ‘tasklist’ without quotes… right now we need to copy this list and the easiest way of doing it is to right click - select all - enter [enter will copy it] now come back and paste but use a fresh answer box. i just need everything with a K at the end, the rest you can remove after youve pasted. and do it like this.

processes 1 processes 2 processes 3 etc etc

i cant have it all over the gaff ;)
