How is quantum mechanics different from previous models?

Previous models did not incorporate ideas of quantized energies. Physicists such as Max Planck found incongruities in models of light by noticing differences of physical results versus answers from theoretical models. Quantum Mechanics adds the concept of integers in a ‘step-function’ like manner in that only certain integral values are allowed for consistent results. As an example the Rayleigh-Jeans formula inconsistency with higher frequencies led to the formation of Planck’s blackbody radiation formula.
