Hard pause button on cell phone, what's it do?

On my cell phone there is a button for a hard pause and a 2 second pause. What does that mean?

The “hard pause” lasts indefinitely - until you take it off of pause. The other one is for when you know you only need to pause the conversation for a few seconds.
