Why do we celebrate Easter?

what is easter anyways..when i think of that word eggs and bunnies pop into my head.

Answer #1

It was the day Jesus came back from the grave. I don’t know where the hell we got bunnies and eggs.

Answer #2

For some people, such as myself, its just another holiday where I buy cool chocolates and candies. Easter is a christian holiday where they celebrate the resurrection. The bunnies and eggs are symbols of spring and fertility for the pagans. When christianity merged with paganism they also merged many ideas and symbols to make the transition for pagans a little easier and familiar. The bunnies and the eggs stuck around. I’m glad, because I LOVE the hollow chocolate bunnies!

Answer #3

we celebrate easter because its the day Jesus Christ rose from the grave. easter is a time to celebrate the rising of the lord our god who rose from the dead three days after he was crucified and now every year we alter the true meaning of easter as a time to get eggs and candy and to eat as much candy as possible without getting in trouble and we put the bunny as the symbol because it represents happiness and love and generosity so every year the easter bunny brings candy and eggs to the children of the world as a loving and caring gift

Answer #4

maby the animal symbolize the comming of joyfullness and the eggs symbolize life?

Answer #5

To really “get” the answer to this, read the Gospels. It’s a great story (regardless of what your religious or non-religious beliefs are), and it will help you understand a bazillion references throughout English literature, too.

I hope all those eggs popping in your head don’t cause any serious injury! {:^P

The eggs and bunnies come from pre-Christian Europe, because nearly all cultures have celebrations of Spring and the new life it brings. In fact, the word Easter probably comes from the name of the Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre. But they were given their current prominence by Macy’s and Hallmark for purely $ecular reasons.

Happy Passover-Easter-Beltaine-Equinox-Nowruz-Holi-Tet-etc.!

Answer #6

yes this holiday (as with all of the other christian holidays) was taken over by the christians from the pagans, the pagans were celebrating the spring equinox and the birth of the infant sun god and the approaching lushness of summer. there are a few names for this festival- EOSTRE, OESTER, OSTARA.

this is just one more thing that the christians took from the pagans, people they then decided to persecute and call EVIL.

Answer #7

Funny that you started your reply with “yes”. I just want to be clear that you are not agreeing with me. Pagans had no ownership rights to spring. Persecutions of various groups by various other groups are a different question.

Answer #8

ha ha yeah

Answer #9

Answer #11

Jesus resurected on this day, and came back from his grave, wen we celebrate easter, were celebrating the rebirth of jesus. Easter eggs came in becuz they show nature and being pure. idk bout the bunnies tho :P

Answer #12

Easter was the festival of the resurrection of Jesus Christ who came back from the dead. Most easter traditions as well as the date of the easter holiday are pre-Christian though. That’s because the Christian missionaries assimilated the “pagan” festivities when they spread their belief around Europe. So there used to be a Celtic festivity on the same date. And then, when they realized they could not eradicate the old traditions and they could not impede the pagan festivities, they simply assimilated them and re-stamped them with new meanings.

Most of the pre-Christian European peoples had four major festivities on the two solstices as well as on the equinoxes. Three of these are still Christian holidays today. Christmas on the winter solstice, Easter on the spring equinox and “All saints day” on the autumn equinox.

Answer #13

Ancient pagan rites assimilated by Christian missionaries. Just like the Christmas tree.

Answer #14

And, oh, Santa is a folkloric myth mixture of the Russian fairy tale Father Frost, the holy bishop Nicolas of Myra, the Dutch legendary “Sinterklaas” and several pagan Germanic influences.

Answer #15

The word Easter comes for the goddess Estre. She was the goddess of fertility. Eggs, like rabbits and hares, are fertility symbols of antiquity. Since birds lay eggs and rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth at the Vernal Equinox.

Answer #16

Isn’t it weird how I got the most likes yet gave the worst answer…?

Answer #17

I totally agree with slash…lol

Answer #18

the real reason why we celebrate easter is because Jesus rose again like He said He would. the pagan part is where we wait for the easter bunny to leave goodies

Answer #19

Thanx for all the likes people!

Answer #20

Because someone decided that we didn’t have enough holidays with candy and chocolate as it is, so they just decided to make one up and tried too relate it somehow to the resurection of Jesus. Obviously, they did a pretty bad job of it.

Honestly, though I have no idea where the whole bunnies and candy thing came from. I think there was a South Park episode about it, though.

Answer #21

The term Easter comes from the word Ostare which is German. Ostare is the holiday for the Goddess of the harvest Ostara, though she is known by other names such as Ester ect. This was pre-Christianism and when Christianity occurred, it changed to Easter. So Easter is Pagan event, believe it or not :P

Answer #22

Some people celebrate if because of the Jesus shizz. I just celebrate the candy and bunny part.

Answer #23

Can you gimme some :)

Answer #24

cuz its said that the bunny was the first to see jesus or something. and it scared it soo much to see him rise, thats why bunnies are timid. idk bout eggs.
