Because back then,you didnt have a choice.If you were appointed to a hearing,you either went,or you were killed and/or jailed.

Ok, you can’t judge something based on the way things are today… It’s like how could people tolerate atrocities commited to the native americans, or to the africans when they were brought over as slaves, to the african americans for more than a century as slaves… People saw things differently back then… the women were thought to be dangerous (possessing dangerous sexual powers), people were illiterate and ignorant and they bowed down to pressure from the church and those in authority, they simply didnt know any better…
