What is the thing you attach to your finger when playing guitar?

I was looking up some guitar covers on youtube and i found a few where people had a little thing (sort of like a ring but on the tip of their finger) that they used as kind of an extension of the finger/finger nail. but they only had it on one finger. what is that called?…it looks like something that would come in handy to me when finger picking. would i be able to get it from the guitar center or off ebay/amazon?

Answer #1

You mean a guitar pick ? You hold it with your pointer finger & thumb & use it to pluck instead of your fingers. http://funadvice.com/r/15hiu5mjqsl

Answer #2

it is like a guitar pick, but you actually attach it to your finger. you don’t hold it.

Answer #4

you’re thinking of a finger pick it’s basically a guitar pick that fits right on your finger, and saves you the trouble of holding it! ebay, amazon, or your local music shop would be good places to look!

Answer #5

okay thanks! In your opinion are they harder to use than a regular pick? what are the advantages/disadvantages to it? :)

Answer #6

They are typically used for a certain style called finger pickin’ and you would usually have one on your thumb as well as two or three of your fingers. It’s an aquired style that works on lots of songs but other songs require a flat pick (flat pickin’) that you have to hold in order to play the rythm right. You can find both types in any music store which I would suggest doing insread of ordering on line so you can try em out first.

Answer #7

Oh by the way they just slip on the end of your finger like a ring

Answer #8

Personally I think they’re harder.. I’ve been playing guitar for almost 10 years and I’ve never liked them I prefer to use either a normal pick, or just pick the strings with my bare fingers Advantages would probably be they keep your fingers off the strings so you don’t end up with calluses on your picking hand and they allow you to be more accurate Disadvantages probably that they’re difficult to get used to and take a lot of practice to get good with!
