What do I do about my new aquarium filter?

I have had my betta fish for about 4 months, bettas are usually fine without a filter but I bought a new tank two weeks ago that came with one and I am thinking about hooking it up. I heard that you are supposed to let a filter run for a certain amount of time before introducing the fish to it, is that true? I don’t have the old tank so what should I do? Or is it fine for me to just hook it up the next time I clean the tank?

The last time I added a new filter I didn’t run it in an old tank for any time. I just cleaned it (due to who knows what is in the factory where it was made.. rather be safe than sorry) and put it in during the next clean. I didn’t lose any fish or anything so I’m sure it would be fine for you to just put it in.

It’s not good to hook up a new filter to an old tank especially if one tank is bigger than the other the filter might not be strong enough. But yes you should let your new filter run for about an hour and thats how long you should let your tank water warm up to room temperature then set your fish in the clean water in a baggy for about 30 minutes to get acclimated to the temperature then dump the fish in and all should be fine.
