Am I Being Paranoid Or Should I See A Doctor?

My eldest sister Jayne thinks I have “polycystic ovaries”. It sometimes comes with symptoms such as excessive bodily hair growth, acne/spots, depression, weight gain, period problems and also infertility. I seem to have all of these problems (although I don’t know if I’m infertile or not). I once briefly mentioned the condition to my mum, but she didn’t take me seriously because my mum and sister don’t get along very well. I’m not sure how to talk to the doctor about my worries because my mum always goes with me. It’s impossible for me to go alone because I’m not a very social person. Should I make my mum listen to me and ask to speak to a doctor about this or am I just being silly?

I got tested with a simple blood test and got the all-clear. I don’t have PCOS or any type of hormonal problems. I guess the excessive hair growth is my dad’s fault then. Lol. He once waxed his legs to raise £1000 for a small charity group. The person to donate the largest amount got to pull the first strip. Lol. I think I’d rather stick with jeans and trousers for the rest of my life. XoD

Buckle up and be a big girl - this could be an important Health issue - see your Dr to put your mind at ease…Take care !!

Next time you go to your doctor, ask if you can be seen without your mom. Or if your mom can step out of the room for a minute. Then you can tell the doctor.

My doctor ALWAYS asks if I want my parent to leve the room during physicals and such.

Or nex tim you see your doctor, just bring it up. Your mom can’t do anything then.

Answer #4

So just bring it up with your doctor. So what if your mum is in the room. Just state your case (ignore your mother), and let the doctor decide. PCOS can be harmful for several reasons (as my doctor keeps trying to point out), so I suggest you talk to them

I brought it up with my mum again. She was beginning to say that my sister is a hypochondriac but I asked her to hear me out. I pointed out all the symptoms I seem to have and I think she’s beginning to have second thoughts. She says we’ll talk to the doctor about it next time we go if I’m really that worried about it. I’m still anxious about what I’ll have to go through (smear tests and stuff) because I was abused when I was 16. But I think I’ll go through with it if I ask for a female doctor to do it. Plus I’ll finally get some answers about all this, so I suppose it’s important that I try to be strong. Thanks everyone for all your support.

They dont need to do tests (actually I dont think they ever do tests), if I remember what my doctor said correctly there’s two ways of diagnosing it, one is by the symptoms (so they may take blood to check testosterone levels) or I think they might do an ultrasound, but usually they just diagnose through the presenting symptoms. Non invasive and not scary (trust me, I still havent been to a gyno because I dont want to be checked).
