I think you have to convert them all to the same denominator:

1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 3/16 = 8/16 + 4/16 + 2/16 + 3/16 = 17/16 = 1 & 1/16

you have to make them have the same denomninator.

if you had to add, lets say, 3/4 and 1/2, you would multiply the 1/2 by 2/2 to make it 2/4. then you can add them.
