Why do I need to mail my personal information out to verify my credit card?

i tried to activate my credit card but it said i need to provide more info like mailing them more info of my self oh im also 18 why do they require this info?

That’s…unusual. Usually all you have to do is call them up and verify the card….I’m not sure where all this is coming into play - maybe it’s an American thing? What kind of card is it?

I had to do this for my American Express card (I do live in Canada). I mailed them a copy of my hydro bill, which showed my name and mailing address, they said it was a final verification step to prove you are who you say you are and to avoid fraud (ie: people trying to get cards under someone else’s name). I didn’t have to do this for my Visa or Mastercard, just the Amex.
