How do i get the cat to use the litterbox?

Answer #1

My 30+ lb cat refuses to use our slef-cleaning litterbox after over a few months of owning it. my dads about to just get rid of the cat since it goes on the floor and my family altoghether isnt in the shape to be able to bend over and clean it up anymore, since my borther and i are already helping out as much as we can. we just want to know what we can do to make him use the actually litterbox

Answer #2

when he used the bathroom somewhere else, kinda scold him and go put him in the litter and tell him this is where you used the bathroom at. or if you see him trying to use the bathroom on the floor pick him up and sit him in the litter box

after a while of scolding and getting in trouble he will learn to use it :)

Answer #3

Also if he repeated goes to the bathroom in a certain spot put something their to detour him from going to that spot in general.

Answer #4

but theres one problem with that: hes too heavy for any of my family to pick up.

Answer #5

can you pick him up?

Well by self-cleaning litter box, I am assuming you mean an automatic litter box. One main reason why your cat may not want to use it, is that it is most likely scared of it. Most automatic litter boxes are somewhat loud, or make some sort of noise, that can scare the cat away. It could even be the big, bulkiness of the automatic box, that the cat is afraid of. I would suggest buying a normal litter box, and filling it with a cat litter that attracts cats (precious cat litters, [link removed] ), and that is the clumping kind for easy cleanup. Since your cat is now used to going on the floor, it might take a bit of training to get it to use it’s new litter box. Whenever you feel the cat may need to do it’s business, (maybe a bit after it eats?), then take it over to the liter box, and place it on it. It may get out of it, but keep an eye on it to see if it looks like it is about to go on the floor, then quickly pick it up again and place it back in the litter box. When it goes on the floor, it may help to take the feces and place them in the litter box, then put the cats nose close to it, and maybe it will learn that that is where it needs to go in. Training it will take some time, and it is a very repetitive process. Here are some links to websites on litter box training, and information on why your cat may not be using the litter box. I hope this helps! Good Luck! =]

The cat’s probably afraid of the noise. I really dont understand what the issue is with cleaning a litter box. It’s done once a day, and it takes less than 2 minutes. Unless all of you have some kind of disability, it’s not complicated… There are sprays you can buy to deter the cat from going in other places. Placing him in the box like a dog will probably not help, they tend to avoid punishment places. Buy another box, if the cat uses it, it means the only issue is that he doesnt like the noise. Oh, and if the box is covered, try uncovering it, it may solve the problem, or if it is uncovered, try putting a cover. That works with some cats.

Answer #12

well, the problem is my brother and i arent home often and werent able to clean the litterbox, and my mom has a major disability in her legs, and my grandpa that we live with has cancer and it’s too hard on him, giving the fact hes also 64 years old and a war veteran.

Answer #13

ok, when i got my cat off a friend, they said to put the litter box in the room you want it in,but also keep your cat in the same room for about an hour just so the cat knows the room that the litterbox is in….it actually worked<–hope it helps=]
