hi hannah, hi franklin

‘format’ is different from and even better than ‘delete everything’. Because any memory device, be it a card or be it a hard disk has an internal organization structure on it. The user doesn’t see it, but the phone (or computer or digital camera) needs it to be able to locate data or blank space on the device.

The ‘format’ button is useful if your memory-device is faulty. You renew/repair the internal data structure by hitting format. Sadly, there’s no ‘un-delete’ if you use format. Format overwrites everything with a new structure and empty space. So you can’t restore lost data from a formated device.
