Why is it so difficult to understand someone that is from Nigeria?

Hello, I would like to know, I’m talking to someone from Nigeria and its so hard to understand him when he has broken up english. Why is it difficult to understand what he says? I’m from the US and, it seems like whenever I talk to this person over the phone, I can hardly understand him. So, what’s the reason?

Answer #1

Because its probley his second language and is probley a lot different from his regular language. I hope your not giving your number away to strangers by the way - thats dangerous.

Answer #2

English is a really difficult language to learn, especially for someone who has already spoken one language their whole life. English is weird if you think about it. Our plurals for some words dont really make sense…like mice to mouse , or goose to geese.. We have words that have more then one meaning, like produce..you can produce results..and eat produce.. and play..you can play outside..or perform in a play.. or wound …wound the string..or put a bandage on the wound…

Also, he most likely has a strong accent that you aren’t familiar with..so that makes it difficult to understand also..

But Stephanie is right, Please dont give your number out to strangers..its very very dangerous.
