Why does my dog do this?

Hi, my dog is 5 years old and he is fed as normal a full tin at 6PM every day, but he is so obsessed with food. You might be thinking every dog is like that but whenever any of my family has food he will stare at them and then told to go away but he will just sneak back and watch again. Even if I have a bowl of cereal or a little biscuit he watches me from the stairs and yesterday I had to shout at him to go away 4 times but then he just looks at me through the corner of his eye at the banister. My entire family are sick of it! 1 night I even fed him 2 full tins to see if he was getting fed enough and he never managed to eat it all. Need help sick of him staring at us any chance he gets and also he goes through my bin, kitchen bin and my other family member’s bins for food. Earlier I dropped I tiny bit of food so he comes rushing downstairs. When I take him out for a walk sometimes he nearly got killed once because he was pulling me on the road to get a it of food and when I pull him back he chokes himself till he gets to it! Please help me and right now he’s staring at me through the tiny opening of my door because im eating maltesers.

I agree with “phrannie”. All dogs do this, but you can put him in another room if it bothers you so much. Also, what type of food are you feeding him? Tinned food (depending on brand) Is like McDonalds for dogs, so most of it will end up in your backyard as poop. Try to upgrade his food to a better quality. I feed my dogs grain free food. Yes, it is a little more costly, but you are only feeding him half as much, but he will be more satisfied bc it is not junk food. And it will also cut down on how much he poops. To me, it sounds like he is not getting what he needs from his diet. Try feeding him smaller meals twice a day. The origin of dogs are as hunters, so they are always looking for thir next meal! Good luck!

feed it morning and night

Answer #3

Ok. So give him a tin and a half instead of two tins?

Answer #4

Stop starving your dog and give him more food. That would solve the issue.

Answer #5

How big is the dog?

A tin of food once daily sounds like your dog is being underfed.

Answer #6

Everybody is right IF your dog seems too thin, then he’s not getting enought to eat. You should be able to feel his ribs with light pressure…but, if his ribs are easily felt, he needs more food.

Now…EVERY DOG is a begger by nature (that’s how mankind and dogs got together in the first place)…turn your back to the dog…In a dogs mind, simply giving you room to eat, with him staring is respectful (just like he’d do with another dog). He’s not trying to take it away, or crowding you.

You need to get over feeling uncomfortable eating in front of him…He’s being totally normal…and you’re getting too uptight. It’s far easier for us to learn how dogs operate in nature, than for them to figure out how we operate. He’s never going to go to another room unless you put him there…so do that…with kindness.
