Why do my seach engine links take so long to open?

I have a net connection of 5000 kbs but when I search on Google, all the links I click on take ages to open up.

EG. Fun advice will take over 20 seconds and this sort of speed is pretty common.

It never used to be like this and not having a lot of PC knowledge, I was wondering if there were some settings in my firewall, Anti-Virus or Google itself that is slowing this down.

I have masses of memory and a fast processor so dont believe it is my PC.

I only have two programs ticked in the msconfig start up folder but obviously, there quite a few others in Startup Services.

I am using Explorer 8 and XP with service pack 3.

My PC was recently wiped clean less than a week ago and for the first day, clicking on sites brought up via Google searches was a lot quicker.

Any advice would be appreciated as this is getting really frustrating.

Many thanks

I tried using Chrome but it makes no difference.
