Why did solomon had too many wifes?

King solomon and others had many wifes. Can someone explain if god allowed it? Also, he had sex with almost all of the virgins at that time. So now some religions use this example to have more than one wife. Is that excused?

Answer #1

Poligramy was common back then among kings, despite God’s warnings against it. (Deuteronomy 17:14)

Answer #2

This is why the rules, and even the nature of god, change from OT to NT.

There are actually seven dispensations within the Bible (5 in the OT and 2 in the NT) none of which change the nature of God.

Answer #3

The Bible does not reflect the will of any gods. It reflects cultural norms at the times the various books were written. This is why the rules, and even the nature of god, change from OT to NT.

God did not intend for a man to have more than one wife. Solomon (and many others in the Bible) did have many wives, but that was never God’s intention. In the NT, it is clear that one of the qualifications for a man to be a church leader is that he be “the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2 and Titus 1:6).

Answer #5

It’s simply a matter of cultural background.

Having many wives was the usual thing back then. Especially for the rich and powerful. They didn’t really think it was wrong. And they didnt think that women were supposed to have the right to be with a single husband. They also didn’t think that a girl should choose her husband. Fathers decided who the daughter is supposed to marry. But then a woman could not marry several men. That was wrong by the ancients opinion.

There is nothing in the 10 commandments that sais you can’t have several wives. It just says you must not want someone elses wife and you must be true to your marriage promises. That’s all it says. It doesn’t even say you’re not supposed to have sex before marriage. Midieval church moral changed the 5th it into ‘You must not fornicate’.

Our morale is just a sum of our culture and society. Remember. It’s always people interpreting the will of God. Sometimes because they believe it’s truly his will. Sometimes to make the world fit their morale views. But sometimes to their own ends and profits.
