Why am I like this with all the guys?

K, so there is this guy tat I really like. We are like best friends. I have felt about guys this way before, but whenever I start going out with them, it turns akward and we kind of drift apart. Today one of his friends said “— wants to go out with you.” and it went quiet, and — was in the room while he said it, and I was like “well this is akward”. Did I ruin it by saying that he wanted to go out with me as akward? How do I get him to ask me himself? How do I avoid the akwardness? The weird thing is is that he has never had a girlfriend before. Hes old enough, but he just never had one. Sorry about all the questions. Please help!
