Where can I get a free download to make banners?

I need to make a banner for an event we are having. I have a Macbook laptop, and need a safe banner software download. Any ideas of where I can find one?

[link removed] that is a free program. It is almost exactly like photoshop. you can make many cool things with that. now if you wanted animated banners you would need to find a program like adobe illustrator.
