When writing a song do you write music or lyrics first?

When you begin to write a song should you write lyrics or the music first? I want to write a song on the piano and it is my first time.

Answer #1

Either. It never comes in any particular order. For the song “I Believe” by Blessid Union of Souls, Eliot Sloan heard the melody first. Vanessa Carlton and Anna Nalick write the lyrics first.

Anna Nalick’s songs come, mainly, from her diary. It’s your choice. Just find your niche and figure out what works best for you. :)

I like to make up songs too and so does my friend. I normally start with the lyrics, as I’ll be walking along the street and a little tune will pop into my head, then I’ll like have written a whole song in my head! But then fixing it to piano I find hard, because im not AMAZING at piano. So I really should make up tunes on the piano first as that would be easier. But if you are amazing at piano then it’s fine either way! As long as a good song comes out of it! xx

Answer #4

I just normally play a riff, then add a lyric melody over it you no; then the words come naturally, just play what you feel like lol

Answer #5

I usually get the music first. It comes in just a phrase or two on the piano. I then get a lyrical tagline to match the music and then build the rest of the song around what I have.

Answer #6

Start with the lyrics that will help you decide the emotion of the song, which can help to find the right key
