its like saying whats the point in last names …

its unique to us and Michelle is probly Unique to whoever gave you that name …

my grandpa’s name was Matthew Charles

he disliked Matthew so everyone called him charles or chas

Well, it helps to differentiate one John Smith from another…for example, John Michael Smith or John Raymond Smith.

Exactly why middle names suddenly became popular within the space of a few generations is not completely clear. To some extent it may simply have been a social trend that eventually became the norm. Middle names help distinguish people from each other. I know of several people with the same first and last name as me but they all have different middle names.

When we named our daughter we choose an interesting first name and a more traditional middle name so should she decide she doesn’t like her first name she can go by her middle.

My dad went by his middle name with his family and his first name at work. When someone called and asked for my dad by his first name we knew it was either work or someone selling something; when they asked for him by his middle name we knew it was family or friends.

I started to go by my middle name when I became a ham radio operator because my middle name was faster to send in morse code. I still go my my middle name sometimes; especially in technical circles.

Some people have more than one middle name; some have a whole list. Catholics often get to pick an extra middle name as their confirmation name and traditionally choose the name of a saint they admire.
