What should I wear for a prom dress?

I’m looking for a dress for senior prom. I’m overweight, so I don’t know what I should wear because I’m uncomfortable with showing the upper part of my arms and my back. If someone could just suggest something or some websites that would be really helpful. Thanks.

A solid-colored, sleeveless dress that’s not covered in sequins or spangles, with a neckline that reaches at least up to your collarbone (such as a mock turtleneck or boatneck), and that covers toward the end of your shoulders will look nice. The darker the color, the more slender you will appear, but avoid actual black. Also, be sure to avoid dresses with ruffles, etc. on them. The poofier the dress, the larger you’ll look. Since the dress will be sort of plain, spend a bit on buying a bright necklace (go for the look of quality rather than flashy glass) and matching earrings. Then, find a nice piece of fabric that matches (or compliments) the dress color, and make a wrap that’s approximately 6 feet long and 2 to 2-1/2 feet wide. This wrap is worn across the upper back, across both upper arms, and can either be crossed in front of the body or worn with the ends draping down between the upper arm and body. Wear the wrap during your prom photos and when you arrive and exit the prom, but you don’t need it for the dancing. If you will be keeping your purse with you, tie it around one of the straps (be sure not to trip on it), or, if there’s a coat check available, that would be a better choice. Good luck, sweetie!

Oh, one last thing: many shops do not actually carry dresses in larger sizes, BUT they have catalogues from which you can order. Be sure to ask about them. When ordering, order as far ahead as possible so they can get a different size if the one you ordered doesn’t fit. I would recommend going one size larger than you normally wear. For some reason, formal wear runs small.
