What is loyalty and integrity in the work place?

Answer #1

To answer your question more accurately, perhaps a definition of each word may be in order first?

From the Encyclopedia Britannica, we find “loyalty” being defined as follows:

“LOYALTY, as a general term, signifies a person’s devotion or sentiment of attachment to a particular object, which may be another person or group of persons, an ideal, a duty, or a cause. It expresses itself in both thought and action and strives for the identification of the interests of the loyal person with those of the object. Loyalty turns into fanaticism when it becomes wild and unreasoning; and into resignation when it displays the characteristics of reluctant acceptance. A man without loyalty does not exist. It stirs and arouses him, brings meaning, direction, and purpose into his life and unifies his activities. At the same time, loyalty has a social function. Only man’s willingness, in cooperation with others, to invest his intellectual and moral resources generously and wholeheartedly in something beyond his own narrow circle has it been possible for communities of various kinds to emerge and continue to exist; among them, family, church and nation.

Integrity, on the other hand, as derived from www.yourdictionary.com…is described as follows:

integrity Definition in·teg·rity (in teg′rə tē)

noun

the quality or state of being complete; unbroken condition; wholeness; entirety the quality or state of being unimpaired; perfect condition; soundness the quality or state of being of sound moral principle; uprightness, honesty, and sincerity

From there, it is a short skip and a hop to the work place to see if the “work place” actually supports both of those definitions or not. Simple as that.

However, the question would perhaps not have been presented here unless there were maybe unspoken, or underlying, reasons “why” it is being asked.

If it is being asked to help better define pre conditions that already exist in a more specific workplace, then I might consider that you add one additional word to your definition quest. That being the word “ethics”. This word may better help you apply the above definitions by better defining the method by which loyalty and integrity are being “applied” in a workplace.

Hope this Helps !
