What exactly do you do at the gym?
I’m heading down to the gym later on as I can get in cheaper and could do with getting into shape, thing is my friend has work tonight and I wanna go tonight, I’ve never been to the gym, only swimming. What do you do at the gym? How do I go about being alone? I’m probably making a big deal out of nothing but I’m only 14 I feel a little out of my comfort zone. Plus any advice on what to wear?
Thanks in advance, x
A lot of people feel the same way you do about the gym. The gym is a place to workout and you can meet people. Don’t feel uncomfortable b/c everyone there has the same goal in mind to get in shape. Get your friend to show you around ask for help at the front desk. Learn the machines and different workouts you would like to do and go from there. Enjoy yourself at the gym and know that if you keep it up, you’ll get in good shape.
When you arrive they may ask if it is your first time there, and if so they will no doubt give you an induction to show you how everything works. In many gyms there will be little cards with set workouts on, on a stand somewhere. You can use these to plan a set thing to do e.g. 20 mins running, 10 mins on an exercise bike, 10 on a rowing machine and so on.
You need to work out what you want from the gym before you go: just a cardio work out or to try and tone up any body areas? You can use the treadmill for good cardio work, for example, hand weights and a rowing machine for arms, steppers and bikes for legs and so on.
Remember not to push yourself. Use a slower setting or resistance on the machines, for a longer time. You want to build endurance not wear your muscles out- do not strain yourself on your first time there, just find out what your body can do. Make sure you keep water with you and have some, and a break, regularly.
As for what to wear, a plain t-shirt or vest and jogging bottoms are best. I wear 3/4 cut off bottoms and a vest top, but obviously pick something comfortable and appropriate from what you already own. Take a towel with you for wiping your sweat and wiping down the equipment after use. Good trainers are important, so make sure you don’t wear any other tye of shoe, as you can damage your leg that way.
I go to the gym and do one push up and that’s it… … … yeah that’s it only one
