What do I do about my cat's abscess?

My cat is 18 years old and over the past few days she has this huge abscess growing on her foot between her toes. A little bigger then a golf ball in between her toes. It is soft and tonight it started to form another bump on it which seems to be draining. I can’t really tell, but I assume that is what is going on. I don’t have the money for a vet and it seems that it started to bother her today. I was told that hot compresses were good for her to help her get through it. But isn’t this a type of infection and with her age could this be fatal with out antibiotics? She is old and I don’t know if her immune system is strong enough anymore to fight it off. What should I do?
