Weaning off bottles

How do I start going about weaning my son off his bottles and formula? Also is the Gerber Fruit Splashers flavored water better for him than juice?

If he is turning one and your switching him over to milk make sure you add a little milk in with his formula and gradually work the milk into his digestive system. You dont want to give him pure milk the first time…

I AGREE WITH BOTH THE OTHER MOMS ABOUT THE FORMULA. AS FOR THE BOTTLE I BOUGHT THIS ZIPPY CUP AT WALMART THAT STARTS WITH A REGUALR NIPPLE, THEN A STRAW LIKE ONE TIL YOU FINALLY HAVE JUST A REGULAR ZIPPY CUP. I HAVE A NINE MONTH OLD AND I STARTED HIM ON ZIPPY CUPS SINCE HE WAS FIVE MONTHS AND HE IS DOING QUIETE WELL WITH IT. HE IS ALREADY TRYING TO DO REGULAR CUPS ON HIS OWN.

AS FOR THE JUICE, THOSE FRUIT SPLASHERS ARE LOW IN SUGARS AND NATURAL FLAVORED AND I LIKE TO USE IT ON MY SON. I DON’T THINK THEY ARE BAD AS LONG AS THEY6 ARE LOW IN SUGAR.

my son is 2.5 years and unfortunately is addicted to the bottle in order to go to sleep during naps and nighttime. I’ve tried weaning him off at night but if I dont give him the bottle he will literally scream and scream for hours on end. eventually he cries himself to sleep. I don’t like doing this because I have roommates. does anyone know a healthy way of getting him to not be dependent on bottles to sleep without having him scream for hours?

thanks

How old is he? You want to make sure that you aren’t trying to wean him too soon.

It’s been 10 years since I’ve had to do any weaning, and I’m not sure if methods have changed but this is how I did it.

When you give him his formula, instead of a full bottle, make it 3/4 full and fill the other 1/4 with whole milk. Keep doing it this way for about a week, since his system needs time to adjust. Then use 1/2 a bottle of whole milk, and continue this way until he’s on just milk.

Getting him off the bottle is a little more tricky. Sit him in his highchair and hold a sippy cup to his mouth, allowing him to drink. He’ll want to take the cup and do it himself - let him, but be prepared for a mess. It will take him time, but he’ll get the hang of it.

I would say that flavoured water is better than juice because of the high sugar content in juice, but don’t substitute it for water - nothing is better for a body than pure water.
