What is the true spirit of music?

Im so sick and tired of the music industry. I feel like that all the good songs get no air time. So it got me thinking, what makes something music. Is it more than just meaningless tonal patterns? And what makes music good? There’s not a lot of appreciation for Brahm’s melodies or Pachabel’s chord progressions. Or even more modern composers like Copland, Bernstein and my personal favorite Bacharach. The ones that get all the attention are the the pop and rock icons of today. Electronics have replaced the need for real instrumentalists. What took years of study in conservatory now can be uploaded onto your computer in less than 30 seconds. So what is good music? Is some music better than others? And what makes us like music in the first place…?

Answer #1

Music is objective. What’s good to someone may not be good to another. There is no such thing as universally good music. No music is better than other music.

Answer #2

Music is SUBjective =)

All songs have the same chords anyway. I’m a cynic after studying music for a year.

Answer #3

Haha, yes, subjective was the word I was thinking of. I’m a little off tonight. I just wrote the last bit of that sentence as “The word of I thinking was.” I can imagine the study of music would throw you off music a bit. At least some music.

Answer #4
