Is the title 'Ms' dying out?

When I look up titles on Wikipedia and elsewhere ‘Ms’ is still listed as the preferred title for women of unknown marital status and as preferred in professional settings. I haven’t heard anyone else use ‘Ms’ since I was in college. When my wife was at the hospital everyone referred to her as ‘Miss.’ The first time I corrected them that it’s ‘Mrs’ or ‘Ms’ since I’m their husband. Since everyone used ‘Miss’ I suppose it was the policy. I work mostly with men but I never heard any of the women in my company referred to as ‘Ms.’

I don’t know, I guess I still use it but I’m pretty old school. I open doors for women all the time, and I think that may be dying out too but I’ll never stop.

Answer #2

sigh I think so. I always thought is was just a sign of respect but now I hear kids calling adults by their first name >.<

Answer #3

what does it matter if its Ms or Miss? I think it means the same thing. But i have always known it to be Miss.

Answer #4

I dont hear it very much, but then most of the women I work with are either just referred to by their first name, or have the title Dr.

Answer #5

I don’t really hear it used at all. No Ms, Miss, or Mr, (except when telemarketers call :P) but the area I live in is rather informally in general. I call most of our customers by there first name whether they are a long time client or the first time in.

My history teacher preferred to go under the title Ms. because she didn’t feel it was right for anyone to judge a woman based on their marital status.

Answer #7

I tend to agree with your history teacher… it’s an option left up to the person being addressed and how they would prefer. Otherwise just using their name suffices.

I like to as well but back in the day when it was more customary to open doors for women they let men get to the door first. It is hard to open doors for women when they race you to it. Then again, I open doors for men to if it is convenient.

Answer #11

Not really, I call all my teachers ‘Ms.’ If they are female of course xD

Answer #12

Years ago one of the feminist groups I belonged to started a letter writing campaign and they suggested everyone sign Ms. including the men. Seemed a bit odd but then again there is probably a place for a gender neutral honorific title. I know one woman who insists on being addressed as Mr. though.
