Who thinks I should go to college, and do something in the cosmetology field?

I am defiantly planning on going to college, because I know I need to get a good education, so I can get a good job and do something with my life.

I just recently started thinking about cosmetology. My family and my boyfriend think I would be good at it, and should go to college, and do something in that field. I am pretty good at cutting hair. I cut mine, my grandma’s, my mother’s, and my boyfriend’s hair, and they all say I really do a good job, and it looks great. I cut layers, styles, etc… I don’t just cut hair straight across…just about anyone can do that.

I would like to know more about cosmetology before I actually start planning on going to college for it. I have a few questions.

[1] Can I go to a community college for cosmetology, or would I have to go to a special school/class/college. (I am only able to go to a community college.)

[2] How long would I have to go to college for cosmetology.

[3] Will I be able to make good money in cosmetology? (I live in a small town.) How much do normal hairstylists in salons usually make?

[4] Is cosmetology a smart field to go into, or will I end up jobless because hairstylists aren’t needed.

If anyone on here has went to college for this, has a job in this field, or can give me any information about this field…it would be greatly appreciated.

Cosmetology requires you to go to a beauty school, not community college. The prices vary from school to school but its usually far less than tuition at a college. I dont know the exact length of time for schooling, i believe its about a year though. You can make decent money is cosmetology depending on where you are working. Most places require that the hairstylest pay a booth fee weekly for cutting in their salon, you make a profit off of each haircut, dye, style that you do though and you also earn tips. Like i said though, it all depends on the salon you work in how much you will make. Ive seen some girls struggle and others thrive in the business. The one good thing is that usually you have a pretty solid customer base since alot of people like to stick to one stylit that they like.

How do I know if there is a beauty school near me? and could I get a pale grant, or not.

There are special beauty schools, most community colleges do not have courses in cosmetology. The prices will vary. It is not cheap. In some cases it can be more expensive than getting an AA at a community college. My friend is going to a school, and she’s paying $15,000 for her course. Her course is 7 months. She is getting student loans. How much you make is entirely dependent on how good of a business person you are (and of course how good of a stylist you are). In a small town, you may want to think creatively. For example while building up your customer base, you may want to go to people’s houses and do your work at their homes. Or you could work out of your own home and save rent money that way. Or you could get a job at an established place because that will guarantee you customers. To find out how much money people make, you’re really going to have to check at your local hair salon. The median wage is $11.21 hourly, $23,330 annual, that’s not a lot. You’re honestly not looking at a great salary. Especially not in a small town.
