How does text messaging work in different countries?

Say an american wants to text someone who is in Austrailia, or U.K, Japan etc… is it just like texting a friend across the road? Or will extra charges be applied?

Different phone companies have different plans. I think you can text them, but you’ll get massive charges from most places.

Only goes for America for you, probably. I used to be able to text my American friends from Canada, but them my phone company changed their plans, so if I were to do that, I would get heavy charges.
