When's the soonest I can be emancipated?

I want to be emancipated from my family, including my parents, and move out as soon as possible. I want to do this when I’m 16 but in my area, as far as I know, you can only get a place to live when you’re 18; so, I was wondering if I get a job, get emancipated and show home owners court papers would I be able to sign, get a place to live and support myself (with only getting necessities, nothing I want)? I have good reasons to be emancipated, so that’s no problem, can I when I’m 16 or what? By the way, I live in Ohio so I don’t know if there are different laws here on it.

Answer #1

Seems like the only way to get emancipated before you’re 18 in Ohio is through marriage or joining the military. Neither the person in question or the parents can file for emancipation.

Answer #2

If you can prove to a judge that you can take care of yourself, yes you can be emancipated..

Answer #3

WHEN can I be? Like as in my age.

Answer #4

From what it said when I looked it up, Ohio has no emancipation laws, so she can’t do that. If she’s being abused, there are other sources she could contact to get moved or something, but emancipation isn’t an option.

Answer #5

Could I get emancipated if my parents and I and went to another state and do it there? Even if we don’t live there.

Answer #6

I wish I could help you more, but I don’t know about that. I feel like that’s probably not possible, but I can’t say for sure. Hopefully someone else on here knows more than I do.

Answer #7

I’m sure you could not own a home or qualify for any legal obligation towards a home, an apartment, car, or any form of credit on your own working or not because legally you are a minor. Nor is the military an option for a 16 yr old. I’d say you have two options…1) as OkaO posted, if you are abused or living in an unhealthy enviornment, there are other sources. 2) Other adult family members who understand your predictament and willing to let you move in with them. But it would still be up to your parents to agree to it. The third which I’m sure you don’t want to hear, is to just deal with it till you become of legal age.

Answer #8

Thanks anyways!

Answer #9

None of my other family members are willing to take me, I only have 3. My old grandmother, my uncle with 3 children of his own and my brother. So I couldn’t do anything even with legal documents saying I’m emancipated?

Answer #10

You’d have to talk to a lawyer in your state, for any finer points…but I’m afraid they are going to tell you the same thing.

Answer #11

why u have such feelings. need for parents is always there even if you are 18 and more. so please dont ever disrespect your parents

Answer #12

Yeah I’ll consult my dr.ug addicted and abusive parents about me needing them when they’re never there for me. I will disrespect them all I want because they’re ridiculous. I don’t need them now, I didn’t need them when I was younger and I’ll never need them.
