Should smoking be allowed in video games?

So, smoking isn’t allowed in tv and a lot of movies, unless the ratings are for more mature audiences, right? What do you think about smoking in computer/video games? Should it be allowed in simulation type games? Do you think parents would let their kids play these kinds of games?

Answer #1

I have to agree, that since smoking is not allowed on the tv or in a great deal of movies, then it should not be permitted in video games. Smoking, as a whole, serves no purpose other then to deplete your lung resources and screw up the air for others who do not smoke. What purpose would it serve in a video game?

Answer #2

I think smoking in video games is as bad as it would be in movies. Video games reach as many people as movies do, and often times, the audience is even younger, which would make this a more evil practice than if it was in a movie, because younger audiences tend to be more impressionable.

I don’t think that smoking should be allowed in video games. Smoking is so incredibly bad for people, so I don’t understand why anyone would want to promote it by having a video game character take part in it. It is not appropriate. Unfortunately, I’m sure many parents do let their children play games in which the characters smoke.

Answer #4

Should smoking be allowed in books? I mean, everyone has to read something in school and no matter the time period, a realistic depiction of people include people who smoke. Heck, if you are going to do a realistic depiction of folks in WWII, the oddball will be the one not smoking.

I think this sounds like a good thing. We finally have a reason to ban kids from being forced to read, “Catcher in the Rye” and “The Great Gatsby.”

I’m shocked at this notion. This just shows how many people fall under the delusion that videogames are solely for children. Most of the videogames that include scenes of smoking are aimed at adults (with an M rating), or at the very least a T-rating (for older teenagers), who are all more than aware of what kinds of threats cigarettes pose to them. It’s not advertising or enticement – it is an aesthetic choice that works very well with the atmospheres and tones and settings of certain videogames. Secondly, with regards to younger and more impressionable children playing such games, it is not the responsibility of the game creators, publishers, or sellers to educate such children on the hazards of smoking or to keep it out of their hands. That is the job of the childrens’ parents, and if their parents are too lazy to accept such responsibilities, the companies involved in making those games should not pick up the slack for them.

In short: Absolutely yes.
