How to help my friend who smokes?

I have a friend who smokes, a lot. She’s so addicted she goes around her house looking in ash trays for what she calls ‘stubbies’ (ciggarrettes smoked almost to the filter). I’ve told her many times that she needs to stop but she doesn’t listen. Her mom founds out but my friend told her she quit. She steals ciggarrettes from her mom! She’ 15 and she’s smoking! It’s disgusting! My dad smokes and I can’t stand it. She says, “My sisters and dad started smoking at young ages so, I’m taking after them.” But she’s the one who decided to smoke! How can I help her without getting her into a ton of trouble.?

This is an excerpt from an article written by an expert in this area - Stopping now is much easier than later in life:

Most teens think they’re just experimenting – but the ‘experiment’ often lasts for decades. As the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids reports, almost 90 percent of adult smokers started before they were 18. Teenagers tend to underestimate how addictive smoking really is: In one survey, only 5 percent of teen smokers said they expected to be smoking in five years, but eight years later, 75 percent were still smoking, according to Drug Topics journal. ‘Nicotine addiction is really a pediatric disease,’ says Ron Todd, MSEd, director of tobacco control for the American Cancer Society.
