Why do onions make us cry when we cut them up?

My sister asked me this, and I actually don’t know the answer.

Answer #1

When you cut an onion, you break cells, releasing their contents. the gas reacts with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulating your eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away. Besides wearing safety goggles or running a fan, you can keep from crying by refrigerating your onion before cutting it or by cutting the onion under water. i hope this helps!

Answer #2

yep, that helps, thanks :)

Answer #3
