Singing career in a small town?

Well I have got some great answers and thanks for all of that. But one of my problems is I live in a small town. I work in an office full time. This town doesnt even have singing coaches. I have sang in church before to some upbeat songs (I dont do hymnal) but no crowd larger than 150. I have no clue on how to record a demo tape. I just need help. If anyone knows and wants to take the time to explain how I can better my career and explain to me how to start recording. PLEASE let me know.

Sometimes it’s better to start in a small town. You can sing locally and make a name for yourself, and before you know it, it’ll spread to the next small town, and the next small city.

Here’s the problem. A&R people receive literally sacks of demo CDs every day. EVERY day. They don’t get through them all. When they find one they like, it has to be exactly like whoever’s currently at the top of the charts.

A&R = artists and repertoire - these are the coke sniffing record company execs who are responsible for finding the “next big thing”. They throw 10 against the wall and see which ones stick. It’s a crap shoot… you have a better chance of being struck by lightening while in a plane crash… So you don’t really want to go the route of a demo CD to a record company.

What about putting yourself on popular video clip sites?

Singing is just not one of those guaranteed careers, like say, welding. High risk, high investment, low chance of return.

As soon as you start to associate money with your art, it becomes something else more sinister. Choose a stable career, and sing on the side, and enjoy it. Look for local bands to join, they’re always looking for singers. Have fun with it. Money and trying to support yourself will turn it into drudgery.
