shitzu care

I have a shitzu puppie that smells I am told there are glands to clean in a shitzu is this true and will a pet groomer do the job or must I take it to a vet???

The anal glands are located around the anus, there are two tiny pinholes at about 4 and 8 o’clock. At the hospital we put on a rubber glove and lube, you have to insert your finger in the anus to feel the gland and with pressure on the inside and out you can express them, I do recommend a vet doing this. you could “pop” the gland with to much pressure and some dogs have inpacted anal glands and you have to be very careful. Is your dog “scooting” a lot.

A groomer can get them…sort of…a Vet can get them totally cleared out without the risk of infection…I’d have the Vet do it first to make sure they aren’t plugged or anything…an infected anal gland is incredibly painful…inbetween Vet checks, groomers can do it.

personally I’d go to a vet to have this done.. you can do it yourself, but you’re taking the risk of injuring the puppy.. the vet knows exactly how its done.. but I had a shih-tzu a few years ago and she smelled like a dirty sock at all times lol.. even after a bath :|.. we had the vet do the anal gland cleanings once every 5 months or so if that helps :)
