Why is a ship's 'bridge' so named?

Answer #1

Because the control room is there and crews has to pass the bridge (the captain hides in there) before they can get from point A to point B on the ship?

Answer #2

Interesting isn’t it. Boats with a single deck have a cockpit, and larger boats have steps up either side to the steering/navi platform, which is certainly bridge-like, but a bridge over what? Or was it simply a way of going over the top of a ship as opposed to walking round the long way via bow or stern?
