Screening for sickle cell in newborns...(Q for a pediatrician)

I’m reading this book and it says “49 states screen for sickle cell diseases [in newborn babies]…”

What is the one state that doesn’t screen their babies for sickle cell? And why would they do that?

Answer #1

Usually, it’s a monetary issue and or ignorance on behalf of the state…having lived in a few states myself, it’s amazing the differences (some good, some bad, etc).

Though I don’t know which state it is that doesn’t do the prescreening off hand. After a bit of research, in 2000, “most states” screened for sickle cell and one quote from an article that’s no longer available said that all 50 states currently do the screening.

You can always check with your doctor (I know I would) to ensure they do the screening…my older son was born in New York, which was one of the first states to implement the screening and yes, my wife is from a country where malaria is more common, which is associated with a higher chance of having sickle cell disease.
