How do you get a very old rusted rod iron banister clean?
Well, when we think of laser cleaning as an industrial solution, we tend to overlook the diverse applications for which it is used – from cleaning of stone artefacts to archaeological silver. Laser cleaning is often used for restoration of artworks, including historic stone sculptures. The safety and precision of the system ensure that the unwanted material is removed and the painting or sculpture is not damaged in any way. Infact, laser cleaning is often used to clean delicate materials like silicon. A helpful infographic has recently been published by SPI Lasers, a leading laser manufacturer, which covers all that you need to know about the technology. Please click here to view the infographic. Steel wool, elbow grease, and something to encapsulate the rust. You should use steel wool or synthetic pads to remove bulk of rust, then wipe the dust down with a tack cloth or a solvent and rag (mind rags soaked in solvent for spontaneous combustion). Then use a rust blocking spray paint to encapsulate and freshen up the look of the rod iron. I would recommend a satin black possibly in Rustoleum's Stops Rust product.
