Why is a red rose placed on the chest of someone who died?

When my 3 grandparents died as soon as the Nurse/Doctor pronounced them dead a Nurse placed a red rose on their chest. I’m curious as to why they do that,My Dad thinks it may be because red roses symbolises love or it may be something religious.

According to what I read, it started because long ago, they were used to cover the smell of the rotting corpse since there was no refrigeration.

Answer #9

Where did you read that? i’ve never heard of that before.

Answer #10

Red roses stand for love, so it was to show their love for the deceased, and also cover up the smell of the body. It’s a tradition mostly.

Answer #11

back in the olden days when we used to burn our dead the country of britannia [now great britain] would lay flowers on the deceased corpse as a sign of respect…

its still teh same now, you go to your deceased grave and lay them on teh grave.

obviously the type of flower changes from person to person and back in the day you had to make do with what was in the back garden.
