Where do people have "mates?"

I thought only Australians had “mates” instead of “friends” lol, but so does England…anywhere else?

We have mates as well. Also, my friend in serbia has mates also. Im thinking its an australian and european thing.

Australia, down here we call almost everybody a mate, including freinds but even if we dont know them and soemtimes even when we dont like them
