Actually, entire European population was mixed several times in migration periods. The Romans coming from what is today Italy invaded nearly all of Europe, the native Teutons(blond), Celts(brown-haired) and Vikings(blonds and redheads) wandered every direction and settled wherever they could. Arabians invaded Spain from the south in A.D. 1400-something. Djinghis Khan came invading from the east with Mongolian riders in the middle ages. And every people left some traces in the gene-pool. There is no typical European. There is no great difference anymore between French, German, British and Polish people.

European people (until about the middle of the 20th century) were white. Somewhat darker in the southern regions (because they have more sun in summer). Hair colors vary from blond and red to dark brown and black.
Spanish population had a lot of Arabic genes since the middle ages. So there were more light-brown-skinned, black-haired people. And people in mediterranean Europe tend to be darker than the scandinavian (northern) Europeans anyway.

Nowadays, children of recent immigrants come from all over the world. So you might as well meet a Frenchman with African genes. They are minority though. In fact everybody born in France is French nationality. There are a lot of people with heritage from Frances former colonies (Cote d’Ivoire in central Africa, Algeria in north Africa, Laos in Southeast Asia and so on) who are French nationality.

I don’t really see how it matters!!! Race doesn’t determine anything really, just be who you r and don’t worry about if people think you’re white, french, whatever.. I would say you’re white anyways … french but still white, sorry!

well cant they tell by your accent and im in french and we study culture. and some french people have pointy noses

Many people mistake “Spanish looks” with “Gypsy looks”. In Spain, as in many Southern and Eastern European countries, there’s a significant gypsy population. For instance, most flamenco dancers are gypsies. Gypsies are the descendants of a nomadic tribe originating from India, and that is the reason they often have black hair, darker skin and distinctive features. Besides, the inhabitants of the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla (Spanish overseas territories) are a mix of European settlers and the original North-African inhabitants, but they don’t represent the average Spanish look.

Of course there’s also some Moorish contribution to Spaniards genes. Unfortunately, centuries of repression and expulsion (remember the Spanish Inquisition?) diluted it to the point it’s barely noticeable. Try telling Spaniards from French or Italians just by the looks. Most of the times you won’t be able to tell.

The majority of French people are white. So are the majority of American and German people.

Spain is classified as Caucasian just like the rest of Europe, and Spaniards don’t even use the word “Hispanic” that’s an American creation, most Spaniards don’t even know what that is. Spaniards come in all shades from very light skin with blonde hair and blue eyes to dark skin and dark hair and eyes and everything in between. I doubt’s you can tell a Spaniard from any other southern European and in some cases from a Northern European. Spain is in European you ignorant fool!

The Moorish genetic contribution for Spaniards is exaggerated; after Spain regained control, most were killed or expelled. Only around 10% of Spaniards carry any “Moorish genes”, and imagine how “diluted” it must be. The Moors were not “black” either; they were something more like Arabic.

Just because some people have extremely narrow views of what makes someone “white” does not change historical fact and actual classifications. You do not need to have glow in the dark skin and pinched features to be white. Many Europeans have olive skin and dark hair in other countries like Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Romania, etc. I have German cousins who are darker in coloring than some Spaniards; and their completely German heritage is traced back to the 13th century.

The ignorant notion that Spaniards are not white is the fault of the US Government and their ridiculous and arbitrary creation of the word “Hispanic”, which basically lumps people who speak Spanish together despite race, heritage, culture, or nationality. Imagine if we did that to all English speakers…imagine saying all Americans, Australians & Canadians are “Anglo” because we speak English, regardless of our actual race? Pretty stupid!

Ok, while I agree with dennisthom09 for the most part, I must say his answer is more harsh than what was necessary and if he has the right to criticize than he should realize that Spain is not in “European” but is actually in “Europe”.
