yes… the ISP does not need your physical computer to do that.

Answer #6

Depends on whether they actually keep a log. Apparently most don’t (I mean it’s a lot of data to keep track of)

Answer #7

How do they do it then :S

Answer #8

All the information is being passed through their network. They can log data as it is being passed through. As for the technical answer, google can isp monitor data

Answer #9

There’s a been controversy about in old Europe, actually. It was about whether or not an Internet service provider was supposed to collect surfing data of non-suspicious people and if so for how long. Actually, music industry was interested in data hoarding more than police was.

The current rule over here is that the connection data only (who contacted what website) is saved for half a year and then deleted. The content data (what did you read on that website and what pictures did you download) is not saved as citizens have a right to secrecy of telecommunications. (Just like they can’t open your letters or put a bug in your phone as long as you don’t have contact with criminal people).

Can’t tell you what the rule is for US.

Of course if a customer asks them to keep track of all connections on their line that is something else. So if your mom went there and asked them to give her a complete, detailed record of next months connections on her Internet line, they will definitely be able to do that.

You can only get around that by using proxy web sites. This is basically a web site that you contact and ask to get another web site for you. People use these in places where the Internet gets censored. Then your ISP will see that you contacted a proxy web site but they will not see what other web site the proxy site gave to you.
