mileage in anautomatic transmission car

I have a Nissan March K11, 997 cc, year 1997, automatic transmission… for 40 km it burns almost 3 litres of petrol… is it ok? I find it too much.. please advise me what to do to have a better mileage..

by the way, tyres are inflated properly, air filter isn’t clogged, no technical problems with the car but it’s consuming too much fuel…that’s my greatest concern. please help me, preferably mail me at destiny111@sify.com

That’s about 18 mpg for us Americans. Ya, that’s kinda low for any car, and it’s super low for a 997 cc engine, automatic or not.

Drive a much longer distance, burn almost a full tank maybe, then see how many km you go. That will give a more accurate measurement, in case you measured wrong. Replace the air filter anyway, if you haven’t already. Replace the spark plugs if you haven’t in a while. You might want to replace the oxygen sensor. Check the compression. Speeds of 50 km/h or lower or stop and go driving will also cause horrible gas mileage. Other than that you can have a mechanic check for any mechanical problems you may have missed. Tell him your fuel economy is very poor.

Minor things you can do for a small improvement: Use the recommended weight of motor oil, not thicker. Avoid the need to brake by leaving plenty of space between you and the person in front of you, and by keeping your speed moderate. Don’t worry about acceleration, however, only your km/h. When cruising at a fairly constant speed on the freeway (not accelerating) ,avoid sudden changes in throttle. Move your foot slowly as if there were an egg between your foot and the pedal.
