How did mathematicians come about pi?

I believe the Greeks are the ones who discovered the value (Approximately 3.14159) by dividing the circumference of a circle by the diameter.

Mathematicians use the pi sign “π“ because it is the letter “P” in Greek… and it’s in the Greek word for perimeter (περίμετρος).
