Machu picchu

Why is Machu picchu considered one of the wonders of the world? What is so special about it? It just looks like a small village on top of a hill.

As a qualified Archaeologist (and as such, somewhat biased) I cannot fail to appreciate the beauty and the original seclusion of the last stronghold of the Incas before they were wiped out by the Spanish.

Look at the photo, how could you say this is not impressive:

It is not only the view but the history behind it.

PS On the same basis, I have no interest in football and find it mind numbingly boring whereas you could live and die football.

I think like any impressive historical sites, it is subjective.

PPS Last year I took my elderly father to see the great pyramid in Cairo, Egypt. After a long coach journey we finally arrived, got out the coach and I said, ‘look Dad! The last survivor from the seven wonders of the world.’

‘Is it not impressive?’

He looked for a few seconds, turned and said to me - ‘Son; do you mean to say we have travelled all this way to see a pile of bloody stones?’ and went and sat back on the coach.

The Phillistine! smile

As I said, this sort of thing is very subjective. Now if we were to talk about the ancient city of Petra in Jordan…
