How long will it take for me to become a good enough guitar player for my band if I take lessons for half an hour once a week?

There is a rule that if you do something for 10,000 hours you become the master at it. I heard that in my psychology class, whether thats true or not is up for speculation.

If the only thing you do is take a half hour lesson once per week, it will take you the rest of your life - and you will still probably not be good enough to perform professionally in public.

Try practising for an hour every day and you could be in with a chance after about a year.

But it is generally accepted that it takes about 10,000 hours of practice on average to become a world renowned virtuoso musician - and that is about 3 hours a day every day for 10 years.

depends on your learning style, how much information you can retain at once, how much you practice, your social life distracting you way from the guitar. At this rate I’ll say about a year, this one kid I’ve been teaching (he’s 12) I’ve been doing it since september and well he practices but he never tunes so it’s always back to square 1 :l

It depends on how good your other band members are, how hard you practice in that half an hour, i would suggest unless you’re amazing at learning things quickly however, to perhaps practice more then that, if you’re trying to become serious with your band. :)

Taking lessons is good. Playing as often as possible is better. Learn your lessons from your teacher. Then once you have them down, start experimenting, improvising. And play play play play play play play…your get the idea? Lessons help, learning yourself, YOUR music is the goal. Don’t be afraid to go beyond the lessons, once you know them. There’s always a new music out there, maybe you are it.

I practice several times a day! I meant I go to guitar lessons once a week for half an hour! My guitar teacher said I pick stuff up fast but I’m just not sure how long it takes to be able to say your a guitar player and be able to be in a starters band but play good music :)
