If I remember correctly "carbonated" drinks have been around longer than that - but the carbonation was achieved through using yeast instead of infusing with CO2. Also the the drinks usually had a small alcohol content, but usually not much (like 0.5 to 1%).

Carbonated drinks were first invested when an Englishman named Joseph Priestley discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide in 1767. So... since 1767. Hope this helped! :)
