How to make each LED light plugged into an Arduino do different things without being connected and controlled by a computer program?

For an assignment in my physical computing class, we are to create a circuit using an Arduino, bread-board, wires, switches/buttons if we want, three LED lights. Usually, the three LED lights are to be put into Pins in the arduino, and what the lights do (blink, fade), are controlled by being plugged into your computer and then controlled by a program you write. The circuit gets the power from the computer as well. However, we are to make the lights do different things without the computer or a program, and an alternate power source. Any ideas what I could do? As well what I could use to replace the power source?
