Is there any reason to get emancipated after you're 18?

Would it make sense? I know that when you’re 18 you’re legally an adult and you can do what you want without your parents consent, but arent they still connected to you somehow? Do they still have any amount of power over you? Is there anything that emancipation can do for you once you’re 18?

Answer #1

I totally agree with kissmysoul…

Answer #2

I disagree. I think that emancipation can still be a good thing. I plan on getting emancipated for school reasons. I am 20 years old. I love my parents, very much, but if I don’t get emancipated I have to claim them on my FAFSA until I am 24, my parents make a lot of money, so I don’t get any help from the government, and I also don’t get any help from them. It can be a smart tool, just make sure you know what you are doing.

Answer #3

Once your 18 you’re your own person(legally), there is no reason to get emancipated.

maggot4 I’m not sure what you mean by “being on your own for sure”. because you already would be on your own.

Answer #4

Well I plan to get an emancipation myself after I’m settled in after I’m 18 cause my mom isn’t the kind of mom she was years ago. It would make sense cause to me your taking a stand and being on your own for sure, they still are apart of you cause of the last name and your their flesh and blood but they can’t tell you what to do anymore even if they want to.

Answer #5

After you turn 18, they have no legal power over you. It’s still a good idea to keep them close in case you ever need something, but there’s no reason to get emancipated after you’re 18.
