is there a difference between...

…depression and what they call “a nervous breakdown”?

Answer #1

In layman’s terms depression is a lack of interest in just about anything. It can include loss of appetite, becoming unsociable, losing interest in the things you liked to do before , when severe it can include crying a lot for no apparent reason. When you are depressed, except for the extreme cases, you are able to function. Depression is usually chronic meaning it lasts for a long time. Having a nervous breakdown is acute, meaning it is more severe and short lived. Usually the person involved loses the ability to function normally in everyday life and tasks. Usually there is very irrational behavior involved and reactions to other people are excessive, out of character and often jeopardize someone’s safety.
